Atmospheric patterns for heavy rain events in the Balearic Islands
نویسنده
چکیده
The Balearic Islands, as well as other Mediterranean regions, are occasionally affected by heavy rain events, which can produce numerous damages. This study contributes to improve the understanding of the dynamical mechanisms that produce heavy rain events by means of a classification of their related atmospheric patterns. Heavy rainfall dataset for the Balearic Islands and some gridded atmospheric parameters, derived from the HIRLAMINM-0.5 analyses, were the data used in this study. Heavy rain events were recorded at a set of pluviometric stations along the Balearics for a period of 9 years, from June 1995 to May 2004. The 1000 hPa and 500 hPa geopotential heights (hereafter φ1000 and φ500), as well as the 850 hPa temperature (T850) were the fields utilized in the classification. By means of a principal components analysis (PCA) the number of variables was reduced. The cluster analysis (CA) was then applied on those new variables and eight atmospheric patterns were finally obtained. Most of the patterns showed a strong relationship between heavy rain events and cyclones.

Simulation of rainfall temporal distribution pattern using WRF Model (case study of Parsian dam basin)
During the rainfall, the intensity of precipitation varies. Changes in the amount of precipitation during an event of rainfall are effective in the resulting of flood and its intensity. Knowledge of how rainfall changes over time during rainfall is determined by temporal distribution pattern of rainfall. For this purpose, availability of short-term time scales rainfalls data are important that ...
متن کاملPreliminary results of the Social Impact Research Group of MEDEX: the request database (2000–2002) of two Meteorological Services
One of the aims of the MEDEX project is to improve the knowledge of high-impact weather events in the Mediterranean. According to the guidelines of this project, a pilot study was carried out in two regions of Spain (the Balearic Islands and Catalonia) by the Social Impact Research group of MEDEX. The main goal is to suggest some general and suitable criteria about how to analyse requests recei...
متن کاملHeavy rain and strong wind events and cyclones in the Balearics
The relationship between heavy rain (HR) and/or strong wind (SW) events and cyclones is investigated for the Balearic Islands. First, a list of HR and SW events is crossreferenced with an objective cyclone database for a 9-year period (from June 1995 to May 2004). The presence of a cyclone centre close to the Balearics is looked for each event. For HR events in most of the cases a cyclone centr...
متن کاملTeleconnections between the Adriatic and the Balearic meteotsunamis
This paper investigates whether concurrent or subsequent meteotsunamis could happen at both the Balearic Islands and the Adriatic Sea as a consequence of either the simultaneous presence of the favourable synoptic pattern above both areas, or propagation of the pattern from one area to another. Meteotsunami events in sea level records from Dubrovnik (chosen to be the proxy for the occurrence of...

Heavy and torrential rains are one of the hazardous phenomena of atmosphere which always cause several severe damages over Iran. For this reason in every developmental program their intensity and frequency should be understood and predicted. The main factor to their development and intensification are the atmospheric pressure patterns and motions. Therefore, in order to predict their occurrence...
